Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen published a statement on Instagram on Saturday evening, May 31, saying he had spoken directly with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle about comments made in a recent interview.

In a series of text slides posted to his verified story, Osimhen said the coach's words had been "taken out of context and blown out of proportion." The post came after clips of Chelle's press briefing began circulating online, and it was framed as a direct response to growing debate ahead of Nigeria's June fixtures.

Chelle had addressed reporters earlier on Saturday in a press briefing ahead of friendlies against Poland and Portugal. He explained that Osimhen would not be included in the squad, describing the forward as being in a transitional club situation and saying he should remain with his current team to avoid risking performance.

The coach also noted that winger Ademola Lookman was very tired and would be rested following a request from his club. The remarks prompted speculation that Osimhen was preparing to leave Galatasaray and that tension existed between player and coach.

In his response, Osimhen said Chelle "has great respect for Galatasaray, follows most of our games, and never intended to create any controversy." He thanked the coach for the conversation, described Chelle as a great coach whom he respects, and said he looks forward to continuing to work with him. Osimhen asked supporters to disregard the speculation surrounding the matter and reaffirmed his commitment to representing Nigeria.

The 27-year-old, who plays for Turkish champions Galatasaray, closed the message with thanks for consistent support, adding heart emojis and the Nigerian flag.
