The Nigeria Football Federation has handed the reins of its two flagship youth teams to Eboboritse Uwejamomere and Abdu Maikaba, placing the Golden Eaglets (U-17) and the Flying Eagles (U-20), respectively, in the hands of coaches who represent two very different but complementary football philosophies.
The NFF Executive Committee green-lit both appointments following recommendations from its Technical and Development Committee.
Uwejamomere is not your typical appointment. The analyst-turned-coach, who has spent years dissecting opposition tactics for both the Super Eagles and the Super Falcons, brings a data-led approach that is still relatively rare in Nigerian football circles. He doubles as academy head at newly promoted NPFL side Sporting Lagos FC, and has sharpened his development credentials through youth coaching stints at Millwall, Gillingham, and Nottingham Forest in England.
For a Golden Eaglets programme that has missed the last two FIFA U-17 World Cups a shocking fall from grace for a team that owns five world titles, his appointment feels less like a routine hire and more like a statement of intent.
Maikaba, meanwhile, is a known quantity. The 61-year-old seasoned tactician has walked these corridors before, having previously managed the Golden Eaglets and served as assistant to Paul Aigbogun with the Flying Eagles. His domestic CV reads like a tour of Nigeria’s most decorated clubs Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Plateau United, Wikki Tourists and his 2017 Federation Cup triumph with Akwa United remains one of the standout achievements of his career.
