Turkish sports journalist Barış Yurduseven, a commentator for TRT Spor and a trusted voice on Trabzonspor, has shed new light on Uğurcan Çakır’s high-profile transfer to Galatasaray.
According to Yurduseven, Trabzonspor made a notable effort to retain their star goalkeeper and club captain. The Black Sea club reportedly offered Çakır a higher salary than Galatasaray put on the table. Financially, staying in Trabzon would have been the more lucrative choice. Yet, the 29-year-old national team goalkeeper turned it down.
“We cannot say he preferred Trabzonspor for the money,” Yurduseven stated. “Uğurcan wanted to play in Istanbul.”
The move, which became official last September, sparked intense debate among Trabzonspor fans. Clubs like Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe, and Beşiktaş regularly attract top talent from provincial teams, often not by offering the most money, but by offering a bigger stage.
