Galatasaray’s Turkish Cup campaign ended in shocking fashion Wednesday night, as a 2–0 quarter-final loss to Gençlerbirliği at RAMS Park sent the defending champions crashing out.
The defeat hinged on two critical errors by goalkeeper Günay Güvenç, whose night turned into a public ordeal.
The 34-year-old shot-stopper first struggled on the opener, but a more glaring mistake followed when he misjudged a cross, allowing Adama Traoré to tap in and seal the win. Sections of the home crowd responded with loud jeers, and Güvenç was later seen in tears on the pitch, visibly shattered after the final whistle.
In the aftermath, the Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen stepped forward with a direct public defence. Taking to Instagram, the Nigerian international wrote: “We stand with Günay Güvenç. One moment doesn’t define a player, mistakes are part of football. It can never outweigh the effort, commitment, and passion he brings to the team.”
