Beşiktaş Manager Sergen Yalçın Criticizes Referee After Last-Minute Penalty

Sergen Yalçın speaking against Fenerbahçe loss

Beşiktaş head coach Sergen Yalçın has strongly criticized the refereeing decision that led to his side’s 1-0 loss at Fenerbahçe in the Turkish Süper Lig on April 5, 2026.

The match moment came in the 90+7th minute, when referee Yasin Kol awarded a penalty against Beşiktaş defender Emmanuel Agbadou for a challenge on Fenerbahçe forward Dorgeles Nene. Agbadou received a yellow card, and the resulting spot kick handed Fenerbahçe a derby win at Ülker Stadium.

Speaking after the match, Yalçın claimed that the referee was too far from the play to make an accurate call. “The referee was at least fifty meters away from the position, there’s no way he could have seen it,” Yalçın said. “He made a mistake and gave the penalty. We watched it after the match. The position was outside the penalty area.” He added that the late decision disrupted the natural flow of an otherwise tense, goalless derby that had featured strong saves from Beşiktaş goalkeeper Ersin Destanoğlu.

The defeat leaves Beşiktaş with additional concerns, as midfielder Wilfred Ndidi received a yellow card and will be suspended for the next match. Despite the loss, Yalçın’s side remains under his leadership as they continue their Süper Lig campaign.
