Fenerbahçe Executive Accuses Rival of Influencing Referees, Federation

Ertan Torunogulları Speaking to press members at Ülker Stadium

Following Fenerbahçe’s 1-0 victory over Beşiktaş on April 5, 2026, club board member and football branch responsible Ertan Torunoğulları launched a pointed verbal attack on an unnamed rival club, which listeners widely understood to be Fenerbahçe’s primary title competitor.

Speaking to press members at Ülker Stadium after the match, Torunoğulları first thanked Fenerbahçe supporters and praised Beşiktaş for a “gentlemanly match played within the rules of football.” He then turned his focus to the rival team, accusing them of systematic off-field influence.

“The rival team — I’m not naming it, but I’m sure you’ve all understood who it is, every time they drop points, they do everything to change the entire agenda, to influence the federation and the referees, and they are successful in this,” Torunoğulları said.

He assured Fenerbahçe fans that the club would not remain passive, stating, “From now on, we will closely follow all of our rival’s matches.” The remark suggested an intent to monitor officiating and disciplinary decisions involving the unnamed club for the remainder of the season.

Torunoğulları reiterated the club’s preference to operate within football’s rules, echoing president’s earlier season comments. “We do not want fights, and we do not want to heat up Turkish football,” he said. However, he added a warning: “But if a fight is necessary for Fenerbahçe’s interests, we will fight as hard as it gets.” The 54-year-old executive, born in Kars and a current Fenerbahçe board member, made clear that while the club seeks fair play, it is prepared to confront what it sees as institutional bias.
