Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 final

Dramatic confrontation on the pitch during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, with players and staff intervening as tensions rise at MetLife Stadium

Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

Ferran Torres, the Spanish forward, scored the only goal in the 106th minute, securing La Roja’s second World Cup title and ending Argentina’s reign as defending champions.

The victory came after a tense, low-scoring match that required extra time due to strong defenses and limited clear chances.

Ferran Torres (Spain) scored in the 106th minute, assisted by Nico Williams (Spain) with a header across goal from a right-side cross. There were no goals for Argentina. Enzo Fernández (Argentine midfielder) received a red card in the 90+3rd minute for a second yellow after a reckless challenge.

Spain dominated possession and chances throughout, controlling the flow with patient build-up play, while Argentina defended resolutely before fading numerically in extra time. A Nico Williams goal was controversially disallowed earlier.

Spain, the tournament favorites entering as European champions, finished the competition strongly with impressive defensive solidity and midfield control. They claimed the title with a positive goal difference across matches, showcasing depth through effective substitutions like Torres and Williams.

Argentina, led by Lionel Messi (Argentine), struggled offensively and could not mount a serious threat despite reaching the final.

Spain’s next match is against England on September 26, 2026, in the UEFA Nations League.
