Kelechi Iheanacho Ignites Celtic’s Title Charge with Vital Winner

Kelechi Iheanacho Speaking to Celticspeaking to Celtic after the match

Celtic kept their Scottish Premiership title defence alive as substitute Kelechi Iheanacho struck late to secure a 2-1 win over 10-man Hibernian at Easter Road on Saturday.

Daizen Maeda gave Celtic the lead four minutes before half-time, finishing Alistair Johnston's low cross after VAR overturned an initial offside flag. Hibernian had been reduced to 10 men in the 21st minute when Jamie McGrath was dismissed for a late tackle on Johnston. The hosts equalised in first-half stoppage time through captain Joe Newell, whose close-range finish stood after a lengthy VAR check for handball could not find conclusive proof.

Celtic controlled possession in the second half but struggled to break down a packed defence until the 72nd minute. Kieran Tierney's cross was flicked on and Iheanacho controlled with his chest before firing through a crowded box from 10 yards.

It was the Nigerian international's fourth goal in five league games, all scored from the bench, emphasizing the run that has included wins at Dundee and in the Scottish Cup semi-final against St Mirren. The 29-year-old joined Celtic on a free transfer in September 2025.

Speaking after the match, Iheanacho said patience was the key against a deep-lying defence and revealed he had considered heading the chance before taking it on his chest. He thanked the Celtic support for their early chants and said his bond with the fans is growing with each appearance.
