Galatasaray have opened talks to sign Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, according to a report in Turkish media published in early May.

Journalist Arda Özkurt, cited by the outlet Haber Sarıkırmızı, said the Istanbul club has started efforts to add the 34-year-old defender and that Van Dijk is interested in wearing the Galatasaray shirt. The report claims Van Dijk has told Galatasaray he could leave Liverpool without a transfer fee if an agreement is reached, and that negotiations are ongoing.

Turkish outlets describe Van Dijk as a priority target for Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek, who has publicly called the Dutchman a "dream" signing for the summer window. Reports say the club is prepared to match his current Liverpool salary and use Turkey's lower tax rate for foreign players to make the deal viable.

Van Dijk has played 52 matches for Liverpool in all competitions during the 2025-26 season, scoring six goals and providing three assists. The speculation follows earlier claims that he was impressed by the atmosphere at Rams Park during Liverpool's visits to Istanbul this season.
