Veteran Defender Thiago Silva Opens Up on Painful PSG Exit

Thiago Silva summits to Paris

Thiago Silva has revealed the emotional toll of his departure from Paris Saint-Germain, saying the club denied him a proper farewell despite his status as the most decorated captain in its history.

The 41-year-old Brazilian centre-back, now at FC Porto on a short-term deal until June 2026, disclosed that former sporting director Leonardo informed him he was not in the club’s plans following the 2020 Champions League final.

Silva said no extension offer was made initially, forcing him to give his word to Chelsea. Only after strong performances in the competition did PSG attempt to reverse course a move he rejected on principle. “Basing their decision on just a few games instead of the eight years I spent at the club left me deeply disappointed,” he stated.

Silva described the lack of a send-off as heartbreaking. “I couldn’t even say goodbye to the fans,” he said. Widely regarded as one of the best defenders of his generation, he won multiple Ligue 1 titles during his PSG tenure. He joined Porto in early 2026, wearing the number 3 shirt.
