Rice blames the Atletico crowd for the referee's U-turn in Madrid

Arsenal midfielder has criticised the referee after his side's 1-1 draw away to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League semi-final first leg.

Speaking to Stan Sport after the game, Rice said he believed home supporters influenced a late decision inside the Metropolitano Stadium. "I think the fans provoked the decision and changed the ref's mind... If it's Premier League it's not given," he said. The England international gave the interview moments after leaving the pitch, still in his kit, and did not hide his frustration with the officiating on a tense European night.

Rice was talking about a penalty that was first awarded to Arsenal in the second half and then overturned following a video review. He argued the reaction from the crowd put pressure on the officials to change the call. Rice suggested the incident highlights a difference in standards, claiming the same challenge would have been allowed to stand in England.

The result leaves the tie evenly balanced before the return leg in London next week. Arsenal are aiming to reach the club's first Champions League final, and Rice's remarks have added to the post-match discussion around the game.
