Nigerian International Noah Atubolu has etched his name into Bundesliga history after saving five consecutive penalties for SC Freiburg, a new record in Germany’s top flight.
The 23-year-old goalkeeper’s remarkable streak began during the 2023/24 season and culminated on Matchday 4 of the current 2025/26 campaign, when he denied Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid in a 3–0 victory.
That save made him surpass the previous shared record of four held by Bernd Leno, Hans-Jörg Butt, and others. Among his victims during the run were high-profile names such as Florian Wirtz and André Silva.
Born in Freiburg to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent, Atubolu has been with the club for over a decade, joining its youth setup at age 13. He made his first-team debut in the 2022/23 season and became Freiburg’s undisputed number one the following campaign.
Atubolu’s record-setting form has helped boost his market value to approximately €20 million. It is reported to have attracted interest from Premier League clubs Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United ahead of a potential summer move.
