Former Milan Star Di Canio Urges Club to Let Leao Go

Paolo Di Canio has launched a sharp critique of AC Milan winger Rafael Leao, advising the club against renewing his contract. Speaking on Sky Sports and Sky Italia on April 10, 2026, the former Milan forward argued that Leao’s off-pitch focus on music and fashion consistently distracts him from performing at the required level.

Di Canio, known for his outspoken punditry, also cited frequent injuries as a major concern, suggesting that the Portuguese international cannot be relied upon over a full season.

The controversial Italian pundit went further, claiming that Leao has shown little to no improvement since the age of 21, despite his obvious natural talent. In Di Canio’s view, Milan often functions better as a team without over-relying on the 26-year-old winger.

He claimed that Leao’s mentality on the pitch does not match his growing salary demands or his status as one of the club’s highest-paid players. “His head is not on the pitch,” Di Canio said bluntly, adding that extending Leao’s current deal would be a strategic mistake for a club trying to build a more disciplined and consistent squad.

Sources reported that Leao’s creativity is irreplaceable, while others agree with Di Canio's comment that his off-field interests and injury record make him an unreliable cornerstone.
