Ella Onojuvwevwo, the 21-year-old Nigerian sprinter competing for the Louisiana State University (LSU) Lady Tigers, delivered a historic performance on April 4, 2026, at the LSU Battle on the Bayou meet.

Making her outdoor season debut in the 400 meters, she stormed to an incredible 49.59 seconds a new personal best, the current world lead for 2026, and an LSU program record. She is the first Tiger ever, indoors or outdoors, to break the 50-second barrier.

Onojuvwevwo is the first Nigerian woman to run under 50 seconds in the 400m in 27 years, since the legendary Falilat Ogunkoya. The feat has drawn immediate comparisons to Ogunkoya, with Nigerian track followers hailing Onojuvwevwo as the heir to that throne.

Earlier in 2026, she also set an African indoor record of 50.28 seconds, proving her breakthrough was no fluke but the result of consistent progression.

Hailing from Ughelli, Delta State, the "small but mighty" Ella has rapidly ascended from promising junior to global contender. Now competing at Louisiana State University under top-tier collegiate coaching, her 49.59 signals a major shift in Nigerian women’s quarter-miling.
