Guido Icardi, the brother of former Argentina striker Mauro Icardi, has revealed that the two have barely spoken for more than a decade.
In an interview with Canal Trece, Guido said they only exchange occasional birthday messages and have otherwise had no real contact for 10-11 years.
“The reason Mauro changed was because he became successful in football and made a lot of money,” Guido explained. He said the family came from very humble origins, at times living in the garage of a football club. According to Guido, when Mauro rose economically and socially, he moved to “an entirely different level,” creating a distance that never closed.
Guido stopped short of harsh criticism but made clear the estrangement stems from his brother’s rapid rise to fame and fortune. Mauro Icardi, who has played for clubs including Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, and Galatasaray, has not publicly responded to his brother’s comments.
