Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has strongly criticized the decision to strip Senegal of the Africa Cup of Nations title, calling it a damaging blow to the continent’s footballing reputation.

Speaking during a beIN Sports interview, Troost-Ekong expressed concern over the broader implications for African football. “This progress has been undermined by the shocking decision,” he stated. “This episode is bad for the integrity and reputation of African football. We have taken two steps backwards and it is self-inflicted damage.” He added that such incidents invite external mockery, undermining years of progress made to elevate the competition’s global standing.

Troost-Ekong emphasized that the recent tournament showcased top talent and high-quality facilities, serving as a preview for the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-host. “I thought Senegal rightly won the tournament,” he said. “I really think it’s unacceptable and sets us back a little bit on the world’s perception of African football.”
