Nigerian Chess Star Tunde Onakoya Edges Out Local Opponent in Malawi Debut

Tunde Onakoya Plays chess in Malawi

Nigerian international chess player Tunde Onakoya played his first tournament game in southeastern Africa, facing a local opponent from the SUSAAN Chess Club in Malawi.

The match took place at the Susan 50 Chess Championship in Lilongwe, marking Onakoya’s competitive debut in the country.

Onakoya, playing as White, arrived at the venue significantly later than scheduled due to a reported hangover from the previous night, leaving him with only minutes on his clock. Despite the time disadvantage, he managed to secure a checkmate with just seconds remaining in the game.

The victory came in the first round of the championship, with four more rounds still to play. Onakoya shared the outcome on social media, acknowledging the challenging start and requesting well-wishes as he continues his campaign in the tournament.
