Nigerian Basketball Legend Sarah Ogoke Retires After Historic Career

Sarah Ogoke won the Golden Cup

Sarah Ogoke, the veteran shooting guard and former captain of Nigeria's national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has officially announced her retirement from international play.

Ogoke retires as the only African player to have won five consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket titles, securing gold in 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023, and, most recently, 2025. Her final appearance for the national team came during the 2026 World Cup Qualifying Tournament in France, where she helped lead the team to victory over the Philippines.

A Bronx-born athlete who first debuted for Nigeria in 2011, Ogoke became a cornerstone of the country's "Golden Generation." Beyond her continental dominance, she represented Nigeria at the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain—where she famously scored 22 points to lead the team to its first-ever tournament win against Turkey—and competed in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
