Presidential candidate Kenneth Agyapong has squarely addressed the core reason why illegal mining (Galamsey) persists in Ghana: the lack of economic opportunities. Agyapong argues that for the government to successfully halt Galamsey, it must first implement effective strategies to create sustainable jobs for the nation's youth.
During a recent conference in the Wassa Amenfi area, Agyapong expressed profound sadness upon realizing that many young people there resort to Galamsey as their primary source of income. Following the event, he took to his Twitter account to share his perspective, emphasizing the need for viable alternatives before enforcing a complete ban on Galamsey. He tweeted, "Galamsey in Amenfi is a tragedy, but we must stop blaming the youth. They are not the problem; the lack of jobs is,"
Agyapong further pledged to prioritize job creation. He stated, "As a businessman, I will deliver the jobs so our young people can work with dignity." He criticized the current administration's perceived failure to generate adequate employment, stressing that "Ghana needs leadership that creates real economic opportunities." Agyapong's platform centers on developing jobs and fostering youth development as a sustainable solution to curb illegal mining and ensure a dignified future for young Ghanaians.
