Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye was named joint-highest rated Super Eagles player in Wednesday’s 2-1 international friendly defeat to Portugal, earning a 7.5 Sofascore rating alongside Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi.

The match was played on June 10, 2026, at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria, Portugal, as part of both nations’ preparations for upcoming fixtures.

Portugal took the lead in the 23rd minute when Pedro Neto finished a cutback from Diogo Dalot. Nigeria equalized before halftime as Akor Adams converted a through ball from Fisayo Dele-Bashiru in the 37th minute.

Francisco Conceição secured the win for the hosts in the 75th minute with a strike into the right corner. Okoye recorded five saves during the 90 minutes, including a stop to tip a Bruno Fernandes volley over the bar. He faced an attack that featured Cristiano Ronaldo, who started and played 65 minutes, and Pedro Neto.

The friendly served as Portugal’s final warm-up before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while Nigeria used the fixture to test its squad ahead of World Cup play-off matches later this year.

Former Nigerian international Dimeji Lawal said Okoye “had an excellent performance” and praised his saves for keeping the scoreline at 2-1. The result marked Portugal’s second-ever win over Nigeria, following a 4-0 victory in 2022.
