Norway Defeat Senegal 3-2 in Group I Thriller at 2026 World Cup

Erling Haaland of Norway sits smiling on the pitch with teammates after Norway’s 3-2 victory over Senegal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Group I match

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway defeated Senegal 3-2 in a Group I match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday in New Jersey.

The victory propelled the Scandinavians into the knockout stage for the first time since 1998. Senegal, needing points to stay alive, fell to 0-2 in the group.

Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, the Norwegian right-back, opened the scoring in the 43rd minute. Erling Haaland, the Norwegian forward, added goals in the 48th minute, assisted by Martin Ødegaard, and the 58th minute. Ismaila Sarr, the Senegalese winger, replied for Senegal in the 53rd and 90+3rd minutes. Norway dominated early with set-piece pressure and clinical finishing before weathering a late Senegal comeback push.

Norway top Group I with six points and a +4 goal difference after two wins. Senegal sit third with zero points and a -3 goal difference, making advancement highly unlikely. The result confirms Norway’s strong campaign following their opening victory.

Norway face France on June 26 in Boston. Senegal meet Iraq on June 26 in Toronto.
