Argentinian forward Lionel Messi scored twice as defending champions Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in a FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match on Monday at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

The victory secured early qualification for the knockout stage for the South American side, who dominated possession and created multiple chances against a resilient Austrian defense.

Messi, the Argentinian captain, opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a left-footed finish from the center of the box, assisted by compatriot Facundo Medina following a swift team move. He added a second goal in the 90+5th minute.

Argentina missed a ninth-minute penalty but controlled the match flow with sustained pressure in the first half and solid defensive organization in the second, limiting Austria to few clear opportunities.

With two wins from two matches, Argentina top Group J with six points and a +5 goal difference. Austria sit with three points after one win and one loss.

Argentina face Jordan on June 27 in their final Group J fixture.
