In Vancouver on June 21, 2026, Egypt secured their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory by defeating New Zealand 3-1 at BC Place, overturning an early deficit to claim three vital points in Group G and boost their knockout stage prospects.

The Pharaohs, led by star forward Mohamed Salah of Egypt, responded strongly after trailing at halftime. New Zealand’s early lead highlighted their set-piece threat, but Egypt’s second-half dominance proved decisive in this crucial group stage encounter.

New Zealand defender Finn Surman, heading in a corner from fellow defender Tim Payne in the 15th minute, gave the All Whites the lead. Egypt equalized when Mostafa Ziko scored with a header in the 58th minute. Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian forward, then put his side ahead in the 67th minute with a finish assisted by Ziko.

Trézéguet completed the scoring with a header in the 82nd minute, assisted by Salah from a corner. Egypt trailed at the break but dominated the second half with superior possession and attacking pressure for a comeback win.

Egypt now sit atop Group G with four points from two matches and a goal difference of +2, following a 1-1 draw with Belgium. New Zealand remain at the bottom with one point from two games and a goal difference of -2. The result marks a historic milestone for the Egyptian national team.

Egypt faces Iran in their final Group G match on June 25, 2026. New Zealand meets Belgium on the same day.
