Mexican co-hosts defeated South Africa 2-0 on Thursday in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A stage at Mexico City Stadium in Mexico City.

Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez scored for Mexico, securing three points in their campaign opener. The victory gives the home side an early advantage in the group.

Julián Quiñones, the Mexican forward, scored in the 9th minute assisted by Érik Lira after a South African turnover. Raúl Jiménez, the Mexican striker, added the second goal in the 67th minute, heading in a cross from Roberto Alvarado. Mexico controlled much of the first half with quick transitions, while South Africa pushed forward after halftime but struggled to create clear chances; the match remained relatively open until late substitutions and a red card to Mexican defender César Montes in the 90+2nd minute.

Mexico tops Group A with three points and a +2 goal difference after one match. South Africa sits last with zero points and a -2 goal difference. The result aligns with Mexico’s favored status as co-hosts with strong home support at the Estadio Azteca.

Mexico faces South Korea on June 18 in their next Group A match.
