Real Madrid missed the chance to gain momentum after their midweek Champions League setback, playing out a 1-1 draw against Girona on Friday at the Santiago Bernabéu.
The result, which came in La Liga Matchweek 31, is notable as Madrid remain second in the table, moving to 71 points from a 22-5-5 record. Girona, meanwhile, climbed to around 38–39 points, sitting 12th in the mid-table standings.
The match remained goalless until the 51st minute, when Federico Valverde broke the deadlock with a right-footed finish, assisted by Brahim Díaz. Regardless, Madrid’s lead lasted only 11 minutes. In the 62nd minute, Thomas Lemar leveled for Girona, finishing off an assist from Arnau Martínez.
Kylian Mbappé received a yellow card for elbowing in the 35th minute, but no further goals were scored despite Madrid’s sustained pressure.
The draw adds to a difficult week for Carlo Ancelotti’s siDe, who trail 2-1 from the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Bayern Munich.
The return leg is set for Wednesday, April 15, at the Allianz Arena, where Madrid will need a strong comeback to keep their European campaign alive.
