Following the 1-1 draw between Atlético Madrid and Arsenal at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Wednesday, manager Mikel Arteta has strongly criticized the decision to overturn Eberechi Eze's second-half penalty.

Speaking after the Champions League semi-final first leg, Arteta said he was left angry after reviewing the incident with his players in the dressing room.

"After going back into the dressing room and speaking to the boys and watching the penalty incident getting overturned, I'm extremely disappointed and annoyed because it was against the rules," Arteta said.

"It changes the course of the tie. I'm very upset," he added.

Arsenal had taken the lead in the 44th minute through Viktor Gyökeres from the penalty spot, before Julián Álvarez equalized for Atlético in the 56th minute with another spot-kick.

Arteta felt his side should have had a second penalty when Eze went down in the box, but VAR overturned the referee's initial decision. The result leaves the tie level at 1-1 with no away-goals advantage.
