Ademola Lookman made history by scoring the goal that propelled Atlético Madrid into the UEFA Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 2017.
The Nigerian forward netted in the 31st minute during Tuesday night’s 2-1 home defeat to Barcelona at the Metropolitano Stadium, converting a low cross from Marcos Llorente with a sharp first-time finish.
His strike restored Atlético’s aggregate advantage, securing a 3-2 victory over the two legs despite Barcelona’s second-leg win through goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres.
Lookman joined Atlético Madrid on a permanent transfer from Atalanta on February 2, 2026, signing a contract until June 2030. In a record-breaking feat, he became the fourth Nigerian to score in a UEFA Champions League quarter-final, following in the footsteps of Obafemi Martins, Samuel Chukwueze, and Victor Osimhen. The goal also took his Champions League tally to eight, placing him third on the all-time list of Nigerian scorers in the competition behind Osimhen (16) and Martins (9).
