Tensions have escalated between Senegal and Morocco following accusations from Senegal's football federation that Moroccan authorities are detaining 18 Senegalese fans as leverage in a dispute over the Africa Cup of Nations title.
Federation president Abdoulaye Fall described the situation as “diplomatic blackmail,” while his counterpart, Secretary General Abdoulaye Sow, stated that the supporters “appear as hostages” in Morocco's push to lay claim to a trophy he argued rightfully belongs to Senegal.
The fate of Senegalese supporters accused of violence by the Moroccan justice system and detained in Rabat is the subject of heated exchanges between Senegal and Morocco, which continue to clash over the AFCON final.

In response, the Confederation of African Football drove out Senegal of the title in March, awarding Morocco a 3–0 victory instead. Legal representatives for the detained individuals have petitioned for a royal pardon as calls grow for their release.
