Nigerian Afrobeat star Temilade Openiyi, professionally known as Tems, delivered a headline performance at the Afropunk Festival in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, on Sunday, November 9, 2025. Her appearance was a central highlight of the festival's fifth edition, a major global celebration dedicated to Black creativity and culture, marking a significant moment in her international career.


The Grammy award-winning singer brought her Afro-culture presence to the historic city, renowned for its rich Afro-Brazilian heritage. Tems created waves not only with her music but also with a memorable and heartfelt interaction with the audience, where she was spotted sharing a particularly tender and romantic moment with a male fan, further endearing her to the crowd. Her performance was an electrifying blend of introspective R&B, neo-soul, and Afrobeats that created a unique synergy with the local energy. The setlist, features major hits like "Free Mind," "Me & U," and "Essence.”


Salvador, Bahia, provided the perfect backdrop for this cultural exchange. As a vibrant city famous for its colorful colonial architecture, pulsating music, and deep African roots, it served as a "sonic bridge" connecting Nigerian and Afro-Brazilian heritage. Notably, Tems was the sole artist from the African continent to perform at the Brazilian edition of Afropunk this November. She joins the list of other prominent international artists who have graced the Afropunk stage, which includes American R&B singer and actress Coco Jones and the iconic Jamaican dancehall pioneer Sister Nancy.
