Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has addressed the club situation facing fellow Nigeria international Stanley Nwabali. Speaking to Sowetan on June 24, 2026, Troost-Ekong stated that Nwabali’s decision to leave South African club Chippa United may have affected his position with the national team.

The defender noted that staying with Chippa could have been “a better decision” given how events unfolded.

According to Troost-Ekong, Nwabali terminated his contract with Chippa United outside of the official transfer window. That timing left the goalkeeper without a club and made it difficult for him to secure a new team. The period without competitive club football coincided with squad decisions for the national team, where Nwabali lost his starting spot. Troost-Ekong said the situation has not been favourable for Nwabali.

Nwabali, who gained prominence after his performances for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, remains a free agent. Troost-Ekong confirmed he has been in regular contact with the goalkeeper. He said Nwabali continues to train and stay fit while awaiting a new opportunity. Troost-Ekong added that he hopes a good offer will come for Nwabali during the summer transfer window.
