Spain and Cabo Verde played to a goalless draw in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H match on Monday at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta.

Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente’s side, the Euro 2024 champions, were unable to break down the resilient debutants from the African nation. The result leaves both teams with a point each after failing to convert their respective opportunities in a tightly contested encounter.

No goals were scored in the match. Spain dominated possession and created several clear chances, particularly through Ferran Torres, who struck the bar and missed opportunities from Marc Cucurella crosses, while goalkeeper Vozinha made key saves for Cabo Verde. Cabo Verde defended deeply and absorbed pressure effectively, with late corners and blocked shots from players like Kevin Pina.

The match flow featured a dominant Spanish first half that yielded no breakthrough, followed by a more defensive second half as Cabo Verde held firm for the historic point.

Spain, currently top of Group H with one point and a goal difference of zero, will need to improve their finishing against stronger opponents. Cabo Verde sits second with one point and a goal difference of zero after their impressive defensive display as World Cup debutants.

Spain face Saudi Arabia on June 21 in their next Group H fixture.
