South Africa defeated South Korea 1-0 in a crucial FIFA World Cup 2026 Group A match on Thursday at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, Monterrey.

South African winger Thapelo Maseko scored the only goal, securing a vital victory that propelled Bafana Bafana into the knockout stage for the first time in their history. The result eliminated South Korea from contention while advancing South Africa to second place.

Thapelo Maseko of South Africa scored the decisive goal in the 63rd minute with a left-footed strike from the center of the box following a quick transition from defense. The first half remained goalless and evenly contested, with both sides creating limited chances.

South Africa grew more assertive after the break, capitalizing on defensive transitions while South Korea pushed forward late but failed to equalize despite several opportunities, including a late save by South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

South Africa finished the group with four points from three matches (one win, one draw, one loss), a goal difference of -1, and second place behind Mexico. South Korea ended with three points and an identical goal difference but placed third. The win marked a historic achievement for the South African side under Belgian coach Hugo Broos.

South Africa will next face the winner of a knockout bracket matchup on June 29.
