Former Nigeria captain Jay-Jay Okocha has described the challenges the national football team faced during the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.

In comments that surfaced this week in an interview, Okocha said the squad endured poor conditions despite winning the gold medal. He stated that the Nigeria Football Federation did not pay for the team’s hotel and that the training bus assigned to the players was withdrawn.

According to Okocha, the situation forced players to cover basic expenses themselves. He said the team ate rice for both lunch and dinner daily and had to use personal funds to buy food. To move around, the squad pooled money to rent a mini bus for transport. The remarks highlight logistical problems that occurred behind the scenes while the team competed in the United States.

Nigeria’s men’s football team won gold at the Atlanta Olympics on August 3, 1996, defeating Argentina 3-2 in the final. The victory made Nigeria the first African nation to win Olympic gold in football. Okocha was a key member of that squad, which also included players such as Nwankwo Kanu and Celestine Babayaro.
