Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16

Erling Haaland of Norway looks up during celebrations after scoring twice in Norway’s 2-1 upset victory over Brazil in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 at MetLife Stadium

Norway stunned five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Sunday at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford.

Norwegian striker Erling Haaland scored both goals to eliminate Brazil, who replied late through Brazilian forward Neymar. The result sends Norway into the quarterfinals for the first time in their history while ending Brazil’s campaign.

Haaland, the Norwegian striker, opened the scoring in the 79th minute with a header and added a second in the 90th minute with a powerful low shot from outside the box. Neymar, the Brazilian forward, converted a penalty in the 90+10th minute for the consolation goal.

Brazil dominated possession and created numerous chances throughout, particularly in the first half, but Norway defended resiliently and capitalized on late counter-attacks for a comeback-style victory in a tightly contested knockout match.

Brazil topped Group C with seven points and a positive goal difference before the knockout stage. Norway finished second in Group I with six points. The victory maintains Norway’s strong historical record against Brazil and highlights their defensive solidity paired with Haaland’s clinical finishing.

Norway will face the winner of England versus Mexico in the quarterfinals on July 9.
