Argentina advanced to the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 3-1 extra-time victory over Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a header assisted by Lionel Messi from a corner. Swiss forward Dan Ndoye equalized in the 67th minute, assisted by Ricardo Rodriguez. Switzerland were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute when forward Breel Embolo received a second yellow card for simulation following a VAR review.
In extra time, Argentine forward Julián Álvarez scored in the 112th minute, and fellow striker Lautaro Martínez added the third in the 120+1st minute. Argentina dominated early but faced a resilient Swiss response before capitalizing on the numerical advantage in extra time for the comeback win.
As defending champions, Argentina continue their strong tournament run with this result, advancing to the semi-finals while Switzerland’s impressive campaign, which included a first quarter-final appearance since 1954, ends here.
Argentina will face England on Wednesday, July 15 in the semi-final.
