Brazil and Morocco Share a Draw in Group C World Cup Opener

Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior equalized in the 32nd minute to secure a 1-1 draw for Brazil against Morocco in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group C match on June 13 at the New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford. 

Moroccan midfielder Ismael Saibari had given his side a surprise lead. The result leaves both teams with one point each from their first fixture in the tournament.

Moroccan international Ismael Saibari scored in the 21st minute with a clever chip over goalkeeper Alisson, assisted by Brahim Díaz. Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior responded 11 minutes later in the 32nd minute with a curled strike from the left side of the box, assisted by Bruno Guimarães. 

Morocco enjoyed a strong start and controlled much of the early play, while Brazil mounted a response before a more even and defensively oriented second half that saw few clear chances.

Both teams sit level on one point with a goal difference of zero after Mais tchday 1. Morocco occupies second place in Group C behind Scotland, while Brazil is third. The draw highlights Morocco’s competitive edge against one of the tournament favorites. Brazil faces Haiti on June 19.
