Galatasaray midfielder Renato Nhaga has stated he will primarily support Portugal at the World Cup before turning his allegiance to Turkey.

The 19-year-old, who was born in Bissau but represents Guinea-Bissau internationally, made the remarks to journalist Cenk Cinar as he prepares for his first senior World Cup appearance.

Nhaga, who holds Portuguese nationality, spent his formative years in Portugal’s Primeira Liga with Casa Pia before making a high-profile €6.5 million transfer to Turkish giants Galatasaray in February 2026. Despite representing Guinea-Bissau at the international level where he has earned six caps and played in CAF World Cup qualifiers Nhaga has maintained strong cultural and emotional ties to Portugal.

The central midfielder has made an immediate impact in Turkey, scoring in his first start for Galatasaray during a Turkish Cup match.
