Following the swap in the new Super Eagles captaincy, Wilfred Ndidi has spoken openly about his feelings, describing the moment as emotional and full of responsibility. The midfielder acknowledged the impact of the leadership change while paying tribute to former captain William Troost-Ekong. Ndidi said Ekong’s influence on the team went beyond the pitch, noting that his calm presence and leadership helped maintain unity during difficult periods.
Speaking with the Super Eagles team on Twitter, Ndidi expressed deep gratitude as he praised the former Super Eagles captain for his commitment and leadership qualities. “Ekong is a great leader. He speaks a lot for the team and tries to take everything in order for peace. He is outspoken, and I admire him a lot,” Ndidi said. He added that Ekong always stood up for the players and ensured harmony within the squad. Ndidi also promised to give his best as captain, stressing that the team remains focused, united, and determined to deliver positive results for Nigeria.
Ndidi also recalled the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, particularly the match against DR Congo that ended in a draw and affected Nigeria’s qualification hopes. “For me, the World Cup failure was very sad, but we will try our best to put a smile on the Nigerian fans’ faces,” he stated. The midfielder assured fans that lessons have been learned and that the team is now fully focused on future challenges. Ndidi expressed confidence ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, promising strong performances and positive results as the Super Eagles prepare to compete for continental glory.
