Peter Obi Reacts to US 'Country of Concern' Designation Over Nigeria Insecurity

Peter Obi
Nigerian presidential candidate who contested the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has broken his silence following the US government's designation of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’ and its threat of potential military action. Obi expressed that this development should alarm every well-meaning Nigerian, emphasizing that the nation is suffering from unprecedented insecurity, resulting in shocking losses of life and property, as he shares on Twitter.

According to Peter Obi, the ongoing carnage is both condemnable and largely avoidable with competent leadership and governance. He cited Amnesty International reports stating that over 10,000 people have been killed since May 2023. While acknowledging that the insecurity did not begin with the current administration, he lamented the absence of commitment, prudent resource management, and patriotic passion on the part of the APC-led government to protect citizens and ensure a just and peaceful nation.

Obi further highlighted the longstanding strategic partnership between Nigeria and the United States as democracies committed to regional peace. He urged constructive diplomatic engagement from both nations to address the security crisis, emphasizing that both countries must work together expeditiously to resolve the pressing issues and preserve their important relationship.
