Leroy Sané issued a public apology to fans Tuesday after Germany’s penalty shootout loss to Paraguay at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match took place Monday, June 29, 2026, at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Germany and Paraguay finished 1-1 after regular time and extra time. Paraguay won 4-3 on penalties, eliminating Germany in the Round of 32. Sané posted his statement from Gillette Stadium, the stadium’s location, shortly after the defeat.

In his post, Sané wrote, "We are disappointed. But more than that, we have disappointed all of you who stood by us every step of the way." He thanked supporters “in the stadium and back home” and added, “It hurts us deeply that we couldn't give you more in return.”

The result ends Germany’s World Cup campaign in the United States. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann’s squad entered the tournament on a nine-match winning streak, including a 2-1 victory over the United States on June 6. Germany had beaten Curacao 7-1 and Ivory Coast 2-1 in the group stage before losing 2-1 to Ecuador. Paraguay advances to the Round of 16. The 2026 World Cup runs through July 19.
