England overcame a early deficit to defeat DR Congo 2-1 in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday.
English captain Harry Kane, the England national team striker, scored twice in the second half to secure advancement to the last 16, while DR Congo, featuring Congolese forward B. Cipenga, mounted a spirited challenge in their first-ever knockout appearance.
Harry Kane scored for England in the 75th minute, headed in from an Anthony Gordon cross, and again in the 86th minute, assisted by Gordon with a clinical finish. B. Cipenga opened the scoring for DR Congo in the 7th minute with a low strike. England dominated possession and chances after the early shock but were frustrated by DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi until Kane’s late brace turned the match, overcoming a defensive first-half display from the underdogs.
England entered the match as Group L winners with 7 points and a +4 goal difference after a strong group stage. DR Congo advanced as one of the best third-placed teams from their group with 4 points.
England will face Mexico in the Round of 16 on July 5.
