Argentina Advances to World Cup Final with Late Comeback Over England

Lionel Messi of Argentina celebrates with a raised fist after his team’s 2-1 semi-final victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Atlanta Stadium

In the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final on July 15 at Atlanta Stadium in Atlanta, defending champions Argentina defeated England 2-1.

Anthony Gordon, the English forward, gave his team a second-half lead, but late strikes from Argentine players Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez secured victory and a place in the final for the South American side.

Anthony Gordon scored for England in the 55th minute, assisted by Morgan Rogers. Enzo Fernández equalized for Argentina in the 85th minute, assisted by Lionel Messi, the Argentine captain. Lautaro Martínez scored the winner for Argentina in the 90+2nd minute.

England controlled much of the early second half after a goalless and physical first period, but Argentina mounted a strong late rally to overturn the deficit.

England, who topped their group and advanced through the knockout stages unbeaten until this match, exit the tournament in the semi-finals. Argentina, the reigning champions with strong group and knockout performances, maintain their title defense momentum heading into the final.

Argentina will face Spain in the World Cup final on July 19.
