Portugal and DR Congo played to a 1-1 draw in their opening FIFA World Cup 2026 Group K match on June 17 at Houston Stadium in Houston.

Portuguese midfielder João Neves headed home in the 6th minute, assisted by a cross from winger Pedro Neto. DR Congolese forward Yoane Wissa equalized with a header in the 45+5th minute, assisted by Arthur Masuaku from a corner kick.

Portugal controlled possession and started strongly but faced a resilient DR Congo defense that grew into the game, resulting in an even second half with few clear chances for either side.

Both teams sit level with one point each and a goal difference of zero after the draw. DR Congo earned their first-ever World Cup point in their return to the tournament after 52 years, while Portugal, one of the pre-tournament favorites, will need to improve to secure advancement from the group featuring Colombia and Uzbekistan.

Portugal faces Uzbekistan on June 23 in their next Group K fixture.
