Argentine forward LionelMessi restated his deep connection to football in comments published by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Inter Miami CF captain and Argentina international said the sport has been central to his life since childhood, adding that he delivers his full effort on the pitch when physically fit.
Romano posted the remarks to social media, quoting Messi: “I love playing football; it has been my passion since I was little kid” and “When I'm in good form, I give everything I have on the field.”
Messi, 38, currently plays for Inter Miami CF in Major League Soccer and continues to represent Argentina. Born June 24, 1987, in Rosario, Argentina, he joined Barcelona’s La Masia academy at age 13 after leaving Newell’s Old Boys.
The forward has repeatedly linked his career longevity to enjoyment of the game, previously telling media that “the day I stop having fun is the day I retire”. In a 2023 interview with Olga Live, he described football as “a job that I love” and said he wants to “continue enjoying what I do”.
The comments come as Messi competes in the 2026 World Cup with Argentina, which defeated Algeria 3-0 in a recent match. Messi explained that his motivation remains tied to winning and influencing games, stating, “I love to win, I love to participate in the game and in goals and important things”.
