Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored a stoppage-time winner as Canada defeated South Africa 1-0 in the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood on Sunday.

The late goal propelled the co-hosts into the Round of 16, marking their first-ever World Cup knockout victory and eliminating the South Africans in their historic first appearance in this stage.

Stephen Eustáquio scored the only goal in the 90+2nd minute. Canada controlled much of the match with superior possession and chances but struggled to break down South Africa’s resilient defense until the final moments.

Canada entered as Group B runners-up with four points and a +5 goal difference after a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina, a 6-0 win over Qatar, and a loss to Switzerland. South Africa finished second in Group A with four points and a -1 goal difference, advancing via a crucial 1-0 win over South Korea.

Canada will face the winner of Netherlands versus Morocco on Saturday, July 4 in the Round of 16.
