Gavi: Barcelona midfielder pleased with La Liga title win at home

Gavi, the Barcelona midfielder, said he wanted Real Madrid to beat Espanyol so Barcelona could secure the La Liga title at home in front of their supporters.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Gavi said, “To be honest, I wanted Real Madrid to beat Espanyol so we could beat them at home and in front of our fans. And that’s what happened. Much better for me.” The comments were reported by Fabrizio Romano this week. Barcelona clinched the league title this season under manager Hansi Flick, with a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in El Clásico proving decisive.

Gavi also addressed criticism from Madrid, saying the club often downplays Barcelona’s achievements. “Everyone knows that from Madrid they’re always going to downplay or diminish the things we win or our titles. So that shouldn’t bother us,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

The Spain international highlighted Barcelona’s back-to-back league titles, noting the squad’s reliance on academy players. “It’s a huge achievement to win two league titles in a row with so many homegrown players, so many from La Masia, and without many signings,” Gavi said. He added that other teams sign many players every year, while Barcelona had very few.

Real Madrid faced Espanyol twice in league play this season. On May 3, 2026, Real Madrid won 2-0 away at RCDE Stadium in Cornellà, with both goals coming in the second half. Barcelona’s title win marks the second consecutive La Liga crown for Flick’s side, achieved while integrating academy graduates into the first team.
