Niang Chooses Calvin Bassey as Ideal Replacement for Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong

Calvin Bassey is present in Fulham Entrance

Following the Nigerian Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong's recent retirement from international football, Senegalese football legend Mamadou Niang has publicly identified the player he believes should step into the defensive void: Calvin Bassey. The Marseille icon's endorsement comes as the Super Eagles look to solidify their defence ahead of major upcoming Africa tournaments.

Speaking on the French television channel Canal+, Niang was highly complimentary of the English Premier League defender's performance. "With what I see at Fulham, the impact he has in Premier League matches, he is a talented, tough defender who has perfect distribution with his left foot, and athletic quality," Niang stated. Bassey, known for his robust physique and athletic attributes, is being viewed by the former Senegal international as a top defensive prospect for Nigeria.

Niang explicitly backed Bassey to take on the leadership role previously held by Troost-Ekong. "I think Bassey is the leader of the Nigerian defence, who can replace Troost-Ekong," Niang declared. Bassey has been a notable figure for the Super Eagles, including his recent contribution to the World Cup qualifiers. Niang’s commendation positions the young defender as a first-choice candidate to anchor the Nigerian defence for the foreseeable future.
