Coach Chelle Drops Udinese Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye

Maduka Okoye lives in Italian hall

Nigeria’s head coach, Eric Chelle, has announced his final 28-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, an important moment for the team as they look to bounce back from the unfortunate loss to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The squad blends names with fresh faces, reflecting Chelle’s attempt to build a balanced team capable of pushing for Nigeria’s fourth AFCON.

Leading the list is star striker Victor Osimhen, supported by experienced midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi. Their presence adds stability to a squad expected to perform under heavy pressure as the Super Eagles chase redemption on the continental stage.

One of the biggest talking points is the absence of Maduka Okoye. Despite enjoying a strong form at Udinese and reportedly being fully fit, the goalkeeper did not make the final cut. Chelle instead opted for Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, and Amas Obasogie.

Sources around the team suggest the decision was purely technical, as the coach preferred the profile and style of the selected triad.

The squad welcomes the return of striker Paul Onuachu and defender Igoh Ogbu, while fresh talents such as Ryan Alebiosu and Ebenezer Akinsanmiro have been called up for the first time.
