Nigerian comedian and actor Ayo Makun, known as AY, commented on the performance of African football teams in World Cup qualification. The remarks were made in a social media post. In the post, AY addressed repeated failures by African national teams to secure spots at the FIFA World Cup.
The post stated: "We have the quality. We have the passion. But until we learn how to control games, protect leads, and finish the job, heartbreak will keep finding us. So painful to watch. Africa deserves better." The statement accentuated what AY identified as tactical shortcomings in game management.
The comments come during the ongoing qualification cycle for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Africa has been allocated nine direct qualification slots and one inter-confederation play-off slot for the expanded 48-team tournament.
