Williams Calls for African Unity, Pushes Politics Out of Football

South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams called for African unity and said politics should stay out of football during a press conference in Atlanta, USA.

The Bafana Bafana captain spoke to media while on international duty, addressing recent fans' claims that he criticized African nations for supporting Mexico. Williams denied making those remarks, stating he has consistently promoted continental solidarity.

Williams said he has been "a target over the last few days about things that I haven't said." He rejected reports linking him to comments about Africa and Mexico, adding, "I've always said that, as Africa, we are one, we support each other." The goalkeeper said he did not know where the claims originated but noted that both he and South Africa had faced attacks over domestic issues. His response came during heightened online discussion around national team allegiances and regional football politics.

The captain urged fans and media to focus on the sport itself. "Let's just enjoy, let's have a wonderful time, and we leave politics to the politicians," Williams said. "Let us just play football, enjoy ourselves and criticise for what happens on the field."

The press conference backdrop featured FIFA World Cup and sponsor branding, indicating it took place during an international football event. Williams used the platform to reinforce his message of unity, asking that attention remain on performance and competition rather than off-field disputes.
